Hiring now: 3-years post-doctoral Research Fellow (part-time) to work in the Horizon2020 project entitled “Subsurface Evaluation of CCS and Unconventional Risks (SECURe)”

Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, is currently looking for a post-doctoral researcher to work part-time in the H2020 project SECURe for 3 year starting from 1 June 2018. The candidate must hold, or will be about to be awarded, a PhD degree in social sciences (sociology, anthropology, psychology, STS, political science, geography, environmental sciences) and have interest in social studies of technologies (technology assessment, risk studies, responsible research and innovation, public perceptions of technology). Fluent English and Polish language skills, very good communication, organizational and writing skills are required.

• High motivation and flexibility, readiness to travel within Poland (Warsaw, Poznań, other locations of shale gas exploration in the South and North of Poland and CO2 storage to conduct fieldwork interviews, organize stakeholder meetings) and abroad (take part in the project consortium meetings)
A successful candidate will carry out the following tasks within the project’s WP5 Developing and Sharing Best Practice Recommendations to:
• Integrate the lessons learned from WPs 1 to 4, together with evidence of best practice internationally, and drawing upon a deep understanding of public needs.
• Exchange and disseminate best practice and knowledge of, inter alia, technology deployment, public engagement and monitoring methodologies, both developed within the project and identified from a global portfolio of projects, in environmental monitoring and risk reduction.
• Co-develop tailor made strategies for stakeholder engagement through participatory monitoring in actual use cases, to apply and evaluate these strategies and to draw best practices for participatory monitoring, as a strategy for engaging local stakeholders in the development of monitoring programs for geoenergy projects.
• Implement a platform for growing and supporting European expertise in environmental monitoring for subsurface geoenergy, particularly CO2 storage and shale gas production
• Establish an expert hub of European and international practitioners including a training programme for researchers at all levels.
Outputs of WP5:
• Recommendations on best practice for establishing environmental baseline conditions (groundwater quality, induced seismicity, ground movement, emissions to atmosphere) in the subsurface and at the surface for CO2 storage and shale gas.
• WP5 will prepare the way for commercial CCS and shale gas plays in Europe through training of early career scientists on field site evaluation and monitoring, demonstrating site conformance through measurement, monitoring and verification techniques, monitoring and environmental impacts of CO2 or CH4 leakage, monitoring tools and requirements for site abandonment.
• Recommendations and best practices on the engagement of (local) stakeholders through Participatory Monitoring.
• Communication with non-technical audiences such as journalists, policy makers and the general public will encourage an informed environment for CCS and shale gas in Europe. We will also contribute, upon invitation by the INEA, to common information and dissemination activities to increase the visibility and synergies between H2020 supported actions.
Other tasks:
• Participation in project meetings (about 2 per year)
• Co-leadership together with the PI from AMU of the task 5.2.2 Overview of Ethical and Social Issues Associated with Shale Gas Research
• Close cooperation with the PI from AMU, Dr. Aleksandra Lis
• Administrative and organizational tasks related to the project
• Cooperation with project partners, mostly with the University of Edinburgh and the Natural Environment Research Council of the UK
• Traveling to Warsaw and other locations in Poland to organize stakeholder meetings and other kinds of meeting as foreseen in the WP5
The position will commence on 1 June 2018 and it is foreseen as a part-time job.
A monthly gross salary (Pl brutto brutto) is between 1500-3000 Euros per month (full-time equivalent) depending on the agreed scope of tasks and working hours.
