Opis stanowiska

The post of the ASSISTANT in entomology in the Department of Entomology of the Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research of the Jagiellonian University, managed by doctor hab. Stanisław Knutelski. The research topics of the Department include a wide range of biodiversity of Invertebrates, focusing on systematic, taxonomy, phylogeny, phylogeography, faunistic, kariology, biology, biogeography, ecology and evolution. In recent years, the Department has expanded scientific activity with experimental taxonomy and issues related to evolutionary ecology such as sexual selection and conflict, inbred depression, and conditional strategy. Animal models of insects, mainly beetles and butterflies, but also water bears, mites, and nematodes, are using for the research. Teaching activities of The Department of Entomology includes the following courses: zoology-field activities – invertebrates; flora and fauna of Poland; zoogeography; biodiversity of Poland; geography of animals; zoology-invertebrates; field course – zoology; ecology of invertebrates; general entomology; island biogeography; integrative taxonomy; entomological techniques-rearing, collection, conservation, insects preparation; life and evolution of insect; conservative genetic; methods and research methodology, tropical ecology; tropical ecology – field course, for nature studies of the Faculty of the Biology and Earth Sciences and the Faculty of Chemistry of Jagiellonian University. Researchers of the Department have also other courses for students, like: undergraduate, graduate and doctoral seminars, and bachelor’s and master degree labs for biology students, as well as a tutorial for Mathematical and Life Sciences Studies. You will be involved in didactic and organizational works mostly connected with an activity of the Department of Entomology and the Mountain Station in Ochotnica Górna-Jaszcze (Poland, Western Carpathians).

EXPECTATIONS:
You will be involved in several areas of the research and didactic program of the Department of Entomology, but in particular, will play a key role in the following:

• having a doctorate degree in biological sciences in biology,
• high score of dissertation thesis,
• scientific achievements including publications in the field of systematic, taxonomy, phylogeny, faunistics, biogeography or invertebrate ecology, including at least 5 articles published in journals indexed in the JCR,
• oral and poster presentations at international or national conferences and symposia concerning the results of research on invertebrates,
• documented skills in the field and laboratory research,
• documented skills in molecular research (especially experience in extraction, amplification, sequencing and DNA analysis),
• knowledge of current taxonomy and nomenclature of invertebrates,
• ability to determination of invertebrates up to the higher taxons category,
• proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and at least one professional statistical program (in particularly SPSS or Quantum GIS),
• documented knowledge of English at least C1 level and Polish language necessary for conducting teaching activities,
• experience in conducting didactic activities, both in the laboratory and in the field for biology students at the university level, confirmed in writing by the appropriate dean’s office for didactic matters,
• organizational skills and teamwork,
• positive supervisor’s opinion on qualifications and predispositions.
